On VMware ESXI host one of my linux VM had a status of VMware tools as not running (current). I had installed the services in previously but due to kernel update this may have caused the VMware tools services to be in stopped state.

There are two different ways to cater it:

  1. Re-configure the vmware tools installer and then reboot the machine to see if tools are starting.
run following command to reconfigure VMware tools (tested in Centos 6.8)

    /usr/bin/vmware-config-tools.pl -D

  2. Start the service manually by following command:

    /etc/vmware-tools/services.sh restart

For other distros the path of installation is different such as in centos 7:

    /etc/rc.d/init.d/vmware-tools start
